Grade 5 is normally considered a good pass at GCSE/IGCSE. On this page we break down the key topics that you need to master to get a Grade 5 at GCSE.
This is not guaranteed, especially since the grade boundaries do change each year.
Grade 1-4
This is a good place to start. Make sure you have mastered all of these common topics, and you haven’t got any gaps. Lots of practice is key!
Fractions
All skills on this playlist should be practice in full.
Algebra will come up each year. Be prepared with these videos.
Ratio
Ratio questions come up regularly. It’s worth practicing this topic!
Highest Common Factor and Lowest Common Multiple
This comes up all the time. You may also see questions combining HCF and LCM with standard form.
Too often forgotten, this is a topic usual taught in Year 9 and students also forget it by Year 11.
Metric Units Conversions
& Speed Distance and Time
Also useful for science of course!
You will need to be able to convert these units in your exam.
Angles in Parallel Lines
One of the most common geometry question types at GCSE!
This is why you must bring a pencil, ruler, protractor and compass to every maths exam!
Compound Shapes: Area and Perimeter
Another typical Grade 4 level topic!
Students should master their calculator. This is an easy way to build confidence in the exam and gain marks.
You’d be amazed at what modern scientific calculators can do.
Warning! – You must still show your working out and show your written algebra.
Grade 5 🤩
Now, Grade 5. These topics are the typical topics that push a Grade 4 student up to a Grade 5. This is how we do. Practice and master these!
Trigonometry
The first 4 videos from this playlist will help students master this difficult topic.
It’s certain to come up every year.
(the later videos in the playlist are Grade 7 – 9 level).
Percentage problems come up regularly. Watch this entire playlist and be prepared.
Quadratics
All students should be able to factorise a quadratic, solve a simple quadratic equation or plot a quadratic graph.
Straight Line Graphs
Another relatively easy topic that student’s seem to always forget.
This is big. Watch all the videos in this playlist (except the histograms videos, as they are Grade 7+).
3D Shapes: Surface Area and Volume
Problems on 3D shapes are likely to come up. They are typical of Grade 5 level questions.
