Reflection – The Key to Success

โ€œWe do not learn from experience โ€ฆ we learn from reflecting on experience.โ€

John Dewey

This page is all about reflection. The act of actively thinking about your experiences and making a conscious effort to do better next time. We encourage you to do this regularly as part of your learning journey.

After every maths exam, you will be able to find ways to do slightly better next time. Sit down and discuss this with your parents, teachers or friends. The below sheet will help you think about this effectively.

Avoiding Silly Mistakes in Exams! – Addvance Maths Video

Reflection worksheet (downloadable and printable) ๐Ÿ˜Š

What part of the exam went really well?

Which part could be a little better next time?

โ€œWhich questions did you do well in? Were they the topics you revised the most?โ€

โ€œHow did you lose marks? Misreading the question? Silly mistakes? Not checking your work? Or did you just not know the method?โ€

โ€œDid you use your time efficiently?โ€

โ€œWhat are you going to practise for the next exam?”

โ€œCan you do that question correctly now?โ€

Useful Addvance links!

The below revision guides cover everything in the british curriculum. They include our animated revision videos and lots of practice.

Now, it’s time to act on the feedback!
If there is a particular topic which they found difficult, then it’s time to put together a plan on how to understand that topic better:
1. Watch the Addvance Maths video on that topic. Use the drop down menu at the top of this page to find that video easily.
2. Ask/email their teacher for help.
3. Do some more practice on that topic.
4. Try the original exam question again, can you get it right this time?

Alternatively, if you lost marks due to silly mistakes, then you need to be aware of your brain’s silly habits. Try to be consciously aware of your tendency to make these mistakes so that you are more alert for them in future exams.

Finally, you’ve done this with exams, you can try it with everything else in life. Life is full of experiences (sport, social situations, organisation, other subjects at school etc), and all these experiences will offer invaluable life lessons to reflect upon!

Good luck ๐Ÿ˜Š
